How to play Irish Poker:
- Grab a standard 52-card deck and gather your players around the table.
- Deal each player 4 cards face down in a row in front of them. Nobody looks at their cards yet.
- Going around the table, each player makes four guesses about their own cards, flipping one card after each guess.
- Card 1 – Red or black? Guess the colour, then flip the first card.
- Card 2 – Higher or lower? Guess if the second card is higher or lower than the first, then flip it.
- Card 3 – Inside or outside? Guess if the third card falls inside or outside the range of your first two cards, then flip it.
- Card 4 – The suit. Guess the exact suit (hearts, diamonds, clubs or spades), then flip the last card.
- Wrong guess? You drink the number assigned to that card (1 for the first, 2 for the second, 3 for the third, 4 for the suit). A correct guess means no drink for that card.
- Once everyone has flipped all four cards, move on to the give-and-take pyramid phase to finish the round.
The give-and-take pyramid (ride the bus):
- Build the pyramid – stack the remaining deck face down in a pyramid: a base row of cards, then fewer cards each row up to a single card at the top.
- Assign drink values – the bottom row is worth 1 drink, the next row 2, and so on, with the top card worth the most.
- Flip one card at a time – starting from the bottom, turn over each pyramid card.
- Give drinks – if you hold a card matching the flipped rank, you can hand out drinks equal to that row's value. Hold two matching cards? Give out double.
- Take or call a bluff – players can give drinks even while bluffing; the receiver may call the bluff. Wrong caller drinks double, caught bluffer drinks double.
- Ride the bus – whoever is left holding the most cards (or loses a final showdown) becomes the loser and has to "ride the bus" for one last solo challenge.
