Ride the Bus Drinking Game – Card Game Rules
Ride the Bus is a classic card game where you try to work your way through four rounds of guessing. Played by 3–8 players with a standard deck.
Setup
- Lay out a deck of cards in a 4-3-2-1 or 5-4-3-2-1 pyramid formation on a table, face down.
- The remaining cards are dealt out to all players.
How to play
When the round starts, flip the rightmost card in the bottom row. If you have one or more matching cards you can choose to place them on top of the card on the table. When you have placed matching cards you can hand out one sip per card you placed on the table. If you get matching cards higher up in the pyramid, the sips you can hand out per card are multiplied by x depending on which row the card is in. (Example: In row 2 you can hand out two sips per matching card.) If you get a matching Ace, you can double that number again.
When the round is over, players count how many cards they have left in their hand, and the one left with the most cards must ride the bus! (If two or more players are tied, the player with the highest card value loses.)
Ride the Bus
When the bus route begins, all cards are collected and shuffled. The cards are laid out in a pyramid formation again and the player riding the bus starts at the bottom, flipping one card per row. The goal is to avoid drawing a face card. If the player draws a face card, a new card is placed in the same spot and the bus route starts over. The player must drink sips based on which row the face card was in. (Example: Row 3 = 3 sips). If you draw an ace, the number can be doubled again. The bus route is complete when the player reaches the top without drawing a face card.
How to play Ride the Bus
Ride the Bus (also known as Bus Driver) is a two-phase card game.
Phase 1 – Set up the card row: The dealer lays out 4 cards face down. The active player takes their turn "on the bus" and must guess correctly 4 times in a row:
- Red or black? (guessing round 1)
- Higher or lower than the previous card? (round 2)
- Inside or outside the two previous cards? (round 3)
- Which suit? (hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades) (round 4)
For each wrong answer the player drinks and starts over from the card they got wrong. The player who completes the bus route without getting the last card wrong "gets off the bus".
Phase 2 – The Pyramid: The dealer lays out a pyramid of cards (5-4-3-2-1). Each card corresponds to drinking rules that can be handed out or taken yourself, depending on whether you have that card in your hand.
Ride the Bus rules – short version
- 3–8 players, one standard deck (52 cards).
- Dealer deals an equal number of cards to all players.
- The pyramid is set up face down – the bottom row has the most cards.
- Pyramid cards are flipped one by one – players with matching cards in hand hand out sips.
- Higher up in the pyramid = more sips per matching card.
- The player with the most remaining cards after the pyramid round rides the bus.
- Bus route: four guessing rounds – red/black, higher/lower, inside/outside, suit.
- Wrong answer means drink and restart from the wrong position.
- House rules vary – some play with stricter or milder penalty rules.
Tips and variants
Drunk Bus variant: In this popular version the bus route continues until the player has completed all four rounds without getting any wrong in a full run – not just one round. This makes the game significantly longer and tougher.
Without the pyramid: Want a quicker session? Skip the pyramid round and go straight to the bus route. The dealer chooses who rides, or players draw cards and the lowest value starts.
Ace rule: Many house rules double the number of sips on an Ace – either in the pyramid or in the bus route itself. Agree on this beforehand.
