Flip Cup Drinking Game – Rules for the Team Game
Flip Cup is the intense team game where two teams compete to drink and flip their cups in sequence. The fastest and most team-focused drinking game for 4–12 players.
You need:
- A table
- One plastic cup per player
- One drink per player
Rules:
- Split into two teams and line up on opposite sides of the table.
- Fill the cups and place them on the table.
- When the game starts, the first person in line on each team chugs their cup.
- Once the cup is empty, place it on the edge of the table with half hanging over. Then use only one finger to "flip" the cup so it lands upside down on the table.
- Only when the cup lands upside down can the next teammate pick up their cup and begin.
- The team is done when the last person's cup lands upside down.
- The first team to complete wins.
How to play Flip Cup
Flip Cup is played by two equally sized teams (minimum 2 vs 2, best with 4+ per team).
Setup:
- Teams line up on opposite long sides of a table.
- Each team member gets a plastic cup with a little drink (about 1/3 full).
- The cups are placed on the edge of the table.
How it's played:
- The players in the first position on each team clink cups ("cheers").
- Both drink the contents of their cup.
- The cup is placed with the opening facing down on the table edge, and the player flips it with one finger so it lands with the opening facing up.
- When the cup lands correctly, the next player on the team starts.
- The team that completes the chain reaction fastest wins the round.
Flip Cup rules and technique
- You CAN try to flip as many times as needed – but it costs time.
- The cup must land with the opening facing up (not on its side).
- You cannot help teammates.
- Each team decides their own penalty rules for losing.
Flip Cup tips and technique
- Place the cup right on the table edge – not too far in.
- Use a light, controlled finger touch (don't hit hard).
- Practice catching the cup with the edge.
- Communicate with the team about pace.
Frequently asked questions about Flip Cup
What do you need to play Flip Cup?
A table, plastic cups (one per player + spares), and two equally sized teams of at least 2+2 players. A rectangular table is best. The drink can be beer, cider, or a non-alcoholic alternative.
What are the rules for flipping the cup in Flip Cup?
The cup is placed with the opening facing down on the table edge. You flip it with one finger (usually the index finger) so it spins and lands with the opening facing up on the table. You can try again if you miss.
What happens if the teams are uneven in Flip Cup?
The most common solution is that the larger team lets one player take two cups (double turn). Another option is that the smaller team picks their best player to take an extra round.
Can you play Flip Cup without alcohol?
Yes! Use water, soda, or juice. The game is about speed and coordination – and it's just as fun without alcohol. Perfect for family gatherings that want team games.
What is 'sudden death' in Flip Cup?
If the teams are evenly matched, a sudden death is often played: only two players (one from each team) face off in a direct heat. The fastest to drink and flip the cup correctly wins.
